Tara’s blog today was very inspiring! I read it start to finish and I know if I don’t do an ode to my Mother she’ll point out that I’m a bad daughter and probably not send home food packages for me anymore. (MOM – I am joking! I know you’d never say anything – you’d just cut off the food packages lol).
My mother is the coolest mom in the neighbourhood! Literally! Whenever my brother or I invite people over to Ma’s place, they all comment on how awesome and hip she is.
My Ma has always been the best of both worlds. She could cook like a professional chef, iron your shirts so well, they looked like they just couldn’t wrinkle and still be a partner in a construction company and party like Prince. She is the perfect mixture of sugar and spice.
I know I can always go to her with a problem and she’ll reply: “Do you want to be coddled or do you want me to tell you straight up?” She continually tries to persuade me to act more like a lady and is pretty good at judging my boyfriends. And when she knows I’ve been having a tough go of it or I just need a little something extra, she’ll make one of my favourite dinners and everything that’s wrong with the world will seem unimportant.
I once found a photo of her from her high school days and she was the epitome of a hippie. Long natural brown hair (complete with sporadic tiny braids here and there), minimal make-up and a funky blue tunic; And I just thought – Wow! Mom had long hair and God she’s cool!
So even though I know she’s made plans to spend time with her Lover (once a woman passes 30 (even if she still looks like she’s 29 – which my mom does!)I don’t think you can refer to her man friend as her boyfriend and Lover sounds so coy) on Sunday, I’ll call her and tell her what a fantastic Mom has been, is, and will be for the rest of my life. I just hope she can forgive me for not visiting with gift in hand this weekend. Maybe those food packages will stop after all…
Happy Mother’s Day Ma – We may not say it enough but We love you (and so do half the kids in the neighbourhood) and we hope you have a great day! xxoo
