Hi. I'm just back from the sod turning ceremony for Gilda's Club of Barrie. The red door will open in January of next year to offer social and emotional support to cancer patients and their friends and families. This day was nine years in the making for the folks who first had a vision and then spent years working tirelessly to make it a reality for the people of Simcoe/Muskoka. I was asked, years ago, to join the media team for this project. The request came at a time when I was searching for something of meaning. My dad had just passed away from cancer ( haven't we all been touched by this disease in some way?) and I thought maybe being involved in this effort might help me make something good of something really bad in my life. My efforts have been nothing compared to the hours, weeks and months of work done by the volunteers and the board of directors. But I still felt proud today when shovels went into the ground on Quarry Road in Barrie. And wouldn't you know this happened today....on my dad's birthday! I just know so many people will be helped and blessed by this clubhouse....a social setting where people can get away from the medical realities and have a little fun. As comedienne Gilda Radner always said " Its always something"....and today it was something very, very good! Congratulations to the Gilda's team!
