A really useful device that was invented in Quebec is getting worldwide attention. Represent, Canada!
It's really cool, the Driver's Mate keeps you from falling asleep at the wheel.
Here's how it works. It sits on the dashboard of your car or truck and is equipped with a camera that points at your face that detects signs of tiredness.
The screen is so sensitive it can pick up blinking eye movements even through sunglasses and it recognizes tired facial muscles. At the first sign of sleepiness, a yellow light goes off, and when the red light goes off it means you have to stop because it's five minutes before you fall asleep. It also buzzes you if you continue to drive when you should be pulling over.
This is definitely useful for truck drivers who have a hard job, driving overnight for long periods of time- they must get sleepy! One in four accidents in Canada are caused every year by sleepy drivers, 30% of the crashes involve tractor-trailers.
So as of now, the device is for big trucks, but a car sized version should be out within the next six months.
Falling asleep at the wheel could happen to anyone, it's incredibly dangerous- I've never fallen asleep at the wheel but I came close not too long ago when I was so tired and heading home on a 3 hour drive, I could feel myself not fully concentrating so I turned up the radio and opened the window and kept slapping myself to wake up- Oh and also a stop at Tim's helped me too!
Keep an eye out for the Driver's Mate!
