Valentines Day Candy Is Changing!

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Can I let you in on a little secret?

Come a little bit closer. Closer than that... okay stop right there. We're good. Here goes.

I LOVE Valentines Day.

It's true. I know lots of people think it's a stupid holiday, that it's completely commercially driven and yadyadyada. That also is true. And I don't only love it because it's a night to spend cooing over your boyfriend or husband and receiving overpriced flowers. I don't care about that stuff.

I've loved Valentines Day since I was a kid. Why, you ask? Because of the CANDY! I LOVE Valentines Day candy. I love how it's wrapped in pink and red foil. I love the chocolate marshmallow hearts and cupids. I love how the smarties are only red and pink- it makes them that much more delicious!

My mom used to (and still does) give my brother, my sister and I each a little Valentines candy surprise on the day. It's just a cute, fun day that gives you the opportunity to pig out on candy. And also in class, kids get to make Valentines mail boxes and cards and bring cupcakes and treats to class. I'm honestly surprised I didn't weigh 200 pounds as a kid.

This year, some traditional Valentines candy is changing... rolling with the times...

Sweethearts candies are a must have on Valentines Day. I just like how they look, not how they taste. Anyhoo, did you know they have been around for 145 years? It's true! They began with phrases like "Be Good," "Be True," and "Sweet Talk". You'll still find Sweetheart candies with those phrases on them, but a couple of phrases have been tossed out like "Fax Me" and "Email Me". Yeah, I mean WHO emails or faxes? It is sooo 2001.

Now we have Sweetheart candies that say things like "Tweet Me" and "Text Me." Pfff and they say romance isn't dead? If anything says come hither, it's "Tweet Me" :)
