And then I got a bad case of the giggles...

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

I had my first yoga class last night. I was supposed to go last week, but it's a long and boring story as to why I didn't go. Better late than never, right?

I went with my friend Becky who had done yoga before. I was just a beginner. Our teacher was very sweet and everything looked just as I had expected it to look. There was peaceful music playing as we walked in. There were comfy pillows around the room, perfect dim lighting, the walls were painted a pretty shade of purple and the room smelled like ginger and tea leaves.

We got there just as the class was about to begin, so all of the ladies there (and one man) had their mats set up in a big circle. They gladly squeezed us into the circle, and the class began.

Nobody mentioned to me you do yoga in your bare feet. If I knew that, I probably would have cut my toe nails. I know that nobody in the class came there so that they could look at my toe nails, but still, it would have been a nice heads up:)

So we began and as strange as it may sound, I felt relaxed immediately. It probably had to do with the music playing in the background and the smell of the ginger and tea leaves and my teachers peaceful voice. I surprised myself because I managed to catch on pretty quickly to all of the positions.

But there was one position that gave Becky and I a bad case of the giggles. If you don't do yoga, then I should let you know this... there is no talking to the friend you came with during the class. It's distracting to the other students and you can't concentrate on relaxing yourself if you're talking to the person beside you.

We had to bend our body into the shape of a standing triangle. As soon as I heard we were going to try this, I looked over at Becky and gave her the yeah RIGHT face. I managed to get halfway through the pose, looked over at Becky who was struggling as much as I was and we started giggling. The teacher very politely told the class (even though she was referring to us) to not laugh or talk to the person beside us because it was distracting... but what happens when you're told to not laugh? You start to laugh even more. And then it became uncontrollable.

I felt bad, I really did. I didn't want to be that annoying new person in the class who was distracting the other people trying to enjoy their yoga. But I couldn't help it! The giggles kicked in as I fell over on my mat and I went from being a standing triangle to squashed roadkill.

Eventually I composed myself and got back into that peaceful, focused state of mind. I have to say that yoga is incredibly relaxing. It's like nothing I've experienced before. You kind of feel like you are on another planet... even if your yoga class is just down the road from where your house, you feel very far away.

Next time I plan on conquering the standing triangle with a straight face. If all else fails... at least I got to put my lululemon pants to good use:)
