Have you ever gotten to the movie theatre, stood in the long line up, gotten to the cashier and she says "all of our movies are sold out"?
That happened to me on Saturday night.
"What do you mean ALL of the movies are sold out? There are like 10 movies to choose from!" I said
"Well, you only have two movie choices left, but you'll be sitting right down in front". How does this happen?
You may be thinking Robyn, you didn't get to the movie theatre early enough. I mean, it was a Saturday afterall. That wasn't the case though. We were there a half an hour early for our planned movie, Sherlock Holmes. It's all Avatar's fault.
Both showing times for Avatar were sold out on Saturday night- yes, over a month after it's release, both times Avatar was playing were STILL sold out. So at the theatre, you're left with tons and tons of people who came to see Avatar and were disappointed that it was sold out, so they settled for whatever movies were left on the movie menu. I can understand that, because these people had already made plans with with their friends and had made the trip to the theatre, so no use in leaving, right?
So like I said, our original plan was to see Sherlock Holmes... that certainly did not happen, it was sold out thanks to the Avatar-rejectees. Our only other choice was Legion (no thanks) and luckily, The Book Of Eli with Denzel Washington (who's still got it I might add- hubba hubba). Luckily we saw it, because it happened to be one of the best movies I have seen easily in 10 years.
Unfortunately though, we were stuck in the second row from the front of the theatre so the actual viewing part of the film wasn't so pleasant. It also wasn't pleasant because there was clearly a younger audience in the theatre who had most probably tried to see Avatar, couldn't get in, so they settled for The Book Of Eli.
The problem is when you have youngsters who are sitting through an almost two hour long movie that wasn't their first choice to see, they start to get restless. So I had the people behind me asking questions out loud like "is that a dog or a cat on the screen?", kicking my chair and getting up often to go get snacks or go to the bathroom, or whatever it was they were doing.
So yes, I'm annoyed at Avatar and wish the hype would die down so the movie theatres wouldn't be so crazy... but I'm glad our only movie option on Saturday was The Book Of Eli because it was brilliant. Definitely a DVD purchase in the future. If you get the chance, you must go see it, it was absolutely brilliant!
