Redhead, Redhead, Brunette

Tuesday, August 11, 2009

A new study by the University of Louisville reveals that redheads feel more pain than blondes and brunettes.

Redheads require up to 20% more anesthesia than blondes or brunettes.

Why does this happen to redheads specifically? Apparently there is a mutation in the gene that gives redheads their unique hair colour and fair skin, which leads researchers to believe that redheads are more sensitive to pain.

This definitely isn't true in my family. Even though I have really dark brown hair, my brother and sister are both redheads. You can't even imagine the amount of times I was teased by them when I was a kid. They would tell me I was adopted all the time- even though I'm not. I know, nice eh? I still meet some of my brother's friends who, to this day, didn't know he had another sister that wasn't his redhead sister. I definitely stand out in pictures when we take a family photo... redhead, redhead, brunette! Actually, my hair is dyed black now, so it's even darker!

I was always the one who was terrified of the dentist/doctor and couldn't handle pain. My brother and sister were always so calm when they'd get a needle or a wound from falling off of their bikes or rollerblades. I would scream bloody murder and panic at the sight of blood.

So the rules don't apply to the two redheads I'm closest to.

Know any redheads who are susceptible to pain?
