I had to make a stop at the grocery store yesterday to pick up a dessert to bring to a girlfriend's house for dinner last night.
I get into the long line up, and I can actually feel someone standing close behind me. I turn around and there is a man who is standing so incredibly close behind me that I nearly knocked into him just by turning around. Why on earth was this man standing so close to me? It was so creepy, I moved up a bit in the line... and he moved even closer! You've heard of close talkers right? Those people who get right up in your personal space and talk way too close to your face? This guy was a close stander!
So after I left the grocery store and got a sense of my personal space back, I headed over to my friend's apartment building. Now look... I've lived in apartment buildings, I currently live in an apartment, I understand not letting the whole world in through the front door to the building that is locked. HOWEVER... I was buzzing my friend who seemed to be on the phone because the call was going straight to her machine- no picking up the phone means no entry to the building.
So I've called 4 or 5 times at this point, and no answer. There is an older woman who is standing on the inside of the door, and she is opening the door for a guy who she obviously knows that lives in the building, he's carrying heavy groceries in. I'm standing in front of the apartment directory and they can see I am having trouble getting let into the building because I keep getting my friends machine. There I stand.. all 5'4 of me waiting with a dessert to get into the building- the man holds open the door for me to come in, and the older woman slams the door shut and screams out 'you can't let her in!!'
I couldn't believe it! Am I that scary?? Then I hear her lecturing the guy (keep in mind she is not the landlord, just some tenant) "we can't be letting people into the building!" I wouldn't go and let everyone into my building either, but when you see someone who is certainly not threatening looking waiting to come in, do you slam the door shut in their face and stand there staring at her for 10 minutes and make sure no one opens the door to let her in? I couldn't believe it. Finally the woman 'gave in' and opened the door for me, and in response I said 'no thank you, I wouldn't want to inconvenience you or get you in trouble for letting me in' so I shut the door.
Eventually, my friend was off the phone and let me in. I told her the whole story and she just rolled her eyes at the woman.
Two of my pet peeve nerves were hit yesterday- close standers and irritating people.

Do you have any strange pet peeves?
