It's Not A "Dry Cold"!!!

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

I'm going to clear something up for the people who keep trying to tell me that the cold weather in Alberta is different- that it's a "dry cold".

I lived in Red Deer, Alberta and let me tell you... it is NOT a dry cold. it is a COLD cold! I did not feel any difference in the type of cold it was when I was living out there... the only difference I felt was that it got down to -55... that my block heater didn't help my car all of the time... and that my car wouldn't start a couple of times in the winter because it was so cold.

When people ask me how it was living there (jeez, I really can't tell you how THRILLING it was) they always ask about the weather... I tell them about the freezing winter, and get back from them "Yeah, but it's a dry cold".

NO, No, no!! I didn't feel this dry cold. To me, it was colder than cold in Alberta... the kind of cold that makes it hard to breathe when you step outside for five seconds. The best I can explain it to people is to take one of the coldest days we have here in Barrie and double it- that's what it felt like.

I remember working til midnight a few nights- the one night it was so cold that my car refused to start, I had to call someone to drive to the radio station I was working at to jumpstart my car. Another night I had to keep going outside every hour to warm up my car. It took forever to get the car to a normal temperature. I'd come outside an hour later and the car was below freezing again. It hurt to breathe in the weather, my nostrils froze up and shivering kicked in right away... it is so cold I don't even know how else to explain it... but I can tell you this... there is no difference to me in the type cold it was in Alberta!

So please... please stop calling it a dry cold! At least when you're around me:)
