FREE Adult Swim Lessons - Adult Swim to Survive

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Barrie, The City of Barrie is offering Free Adult lessons every Friday afternoon from May 3^rd to Jun 7^th. Each lesson will be 1 hour in length.

Participants will learn the minimum skills needed to survive an unexpected fall into deep water. These are expressed in a skill sequence of:

Roll into deep water
Tread water for one minute
Swim 50 meters
Talk, throw and reach

Residents are required to contact the Holly Community Centre to sign up and secure their spot in a lesson, as spaces are limited to 24 participants per 1 hour lesson.

Every May long weekend, the South Springwater Firefighters Association helps with the Springwater/Vespra Lions Club to sell fireworks. They are there promoting fire safety, selling burning permits, and answering any questions the public might have concerning fireworks and fire safety. All proceeds raised go back into the public through charities, public events, etc.

They will be set up on Bayfield St. in Midhurst across from Curries truck center Friday May 17^th, 3-9pm; Saturday May 18^th, 9am – 9pm; and Sunday May 19^th, 9am – 9pm.

The Returns for Leukemia Bottle Drive

An initiative started by the United Food and Commercial Workers, in partnership with the Beer Store, supports the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada by gathering returnable beer and spirit bottles. Last year $1,668,012.24 in donations were collected and are already making a big difference in the fight against blood cancers.

This year The Returns for Leukemia needs volunteers at their retail locations across Ontario to assist in greeting customers and collecting their empties. The event is held in May after the first long weekend.

Volunteers are needed on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and Sunday between noon and 5 p.m.

On the weekend of May 25 & 26, 2013, customers are invited to donate all or a portion of their empty bottles (or cash), with 100% of the proceeds going directly to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.

1st Annual Buttertart Festival

Buttertart lovers, be warned! During Father’s Day weekend, Downtown Midland is the place you will want to be. Downtown Midland BIA is organizing the 1^st Annual Buttertart Festival for Saturday June 15.

So you think you make the best buttertarts in Ontario? Well, here’s your opportunity to prove it! Professionals and home bakers are invited to enter their buttertarts into this finger-lickin’ smack-down on Saturday, June 15 during Father’s Day weekend between noon and 2pm in the Atrium at the Midland Cultural Centre.

The deadline for application entries will be May 15 and entry forms can be downloaded at www.buttertartfestival.ca. A panel of judges, which will include the winner from writing contest, will be scoring each numbered entry and only when the scores have been tallied will the identification of the winner be revealed. Confirmed judges are Mayor Gord McKay and renowned artist and buttertart expert, Charles Pachter of Coldwater. Additional judges will be announced soon.

The buttertart that scores the highest will not only be declared the Best Buttertart in Ontario, they will be the recipient of a cash prize.

The Writing Contest, hosted by The Midland Mirror, will entail a child or youth writing a 100-word article about why their father, grandfather, uncle, step-father or male guardian should be a Buttertart Tasting Judge. Written entries are to be sent to The Mirror where the best will be published and readers will be asked to vote. The winner will join the panel of Buttertart Tasting judges at the Midland Cultural Centre between noon and 2 pm to taste and score the buttertart entries.

THE COMMUNITY BAKE SALE - A portion of King Street, Midland, will be turned into a Community Bake Sale. Charities, Not-for-Profits and BIA Members are invited to set up tables and/or tents between Dominion and Bay on King Street between 8:30 am and noon to sell baked goods (no meat, no dairy). Applications to reserve a spot are also be available at www.buttertartfestival.ca. To help digest and wear off all that baking, the public will be able to dance to some great tunes.

THE SIDEWALK SALE - Shoppers can take advantage of the 1^st Annual Buttertart Festival Sidewalk Sale. The merchants of Downtown Midland will be bringing out their goods and marking down their prices.

3rd Annual Ben Mueller Memorial Golf Tournament

Ben Mueller was diagnosed with cancer in November of 2007, at 18 years old. Throughout the next 13 months, Ben’s remarkable energy, charisma and incredible love for life saw him through his desperate struggle for survival. Ben passed away on December 15, 2008, and left behind a legacy of friendship, fidelity, and positivity that has been a comfort to all his loved ones who miss him so dearly.

This cause has already raised $14,800! $2,000 of the money raised helped a student at Bear Creek Secondary School go to Post Secondary school, with the remaining amount going to the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Care Centre at Royal Victoria Hospital.

This event takes place Saturday, May 25^th, 2013 at 10:00 am at the Bear Creek Golf Course. Registration costs $125.00 which includes: 18 Holes of golf, Power Cart and dinner.

The Friend for Life walk-a-thon is not just a walk in the park. It is unique amongst walk-a-thon in that it is in support of animals, animals that require immediate care, in some cases to survive.

These animals may have be rescued by an Ontario SPCA peace officer and in some cases suffering from, neglect, abuse, abandonment, or surrendered because their owner is unable or unwilling to care for them any longer.

The Ontario SPCA is a not for profit organization depending on the support of it surrounding communities to be able to provide a voice for thousand of animals in need. The Friend for Life! walk-a-thon is the Ontario SPCA way of raising critical fund to help support our accentual programs.

In honour of the late Jamie Turner and his lover for music, in partnership with the Turner family, we are hosting a fabulous evening of live music from local talent.

The event will be held on May 30^th, 2013 at the Army, Navy, Air Force Club at 6 George Street, Barrie. Doors open at 6 pm with bands starting at 7 pm. Attending tickets are $40 per person (includes light meal) and $30 for non-attending.

**Mental Health First Aid – is an evidence based course through the Mental Health Commission of Canada. There are a number of benefits including:

Better recognition of mental health difficulties
Increased knowledge about appropriate treatments
Reduce stigma
Increased confidence in providing help to others

2013 training dates are April 24^th and 25^th, and October 24^th and 25^th.

DIY – this is an interactive arts center in Barrie providing a range of activities (space for art classes, poetry reading, music, etc.) DIY will be hosting an evening of live music on May 10^th, 2013 with proceeds being donated to CMHA.

Currently the only youth shelter in Simcoe County, Youth Haven supports 700+ homeless youth aged 16-21 by providing them with emergency and long term shelter, food and counseling.

Youth Haven is running a Dodgeball Tournament, looking for donations to raise $5000 to assist with the day-to-day costs of running the program. If you would like to register a team, team fee is $250 per team, a minimum of 10 players, with a minimum of 4 females required. It is a double elimination tournament which means you are guaranteed at least 2 games.

The tournament will be held on June 8^th from 9am to 5pm at Barrie North Collegiate.

Excitement continues to build as the boat show committee recently announced a fourth full day of activities at the 33rd Annual Boat Show to be held in Gravenhurst from Thursday, July 4 through Sunday, July 7 in conjunction with our partners, the

Muskoka Steamships and Historical Society!

Recently added events for Sunday SUMMER ACTION SHOW with a Sea Flea Festival, BMX/FMX stunt shows, vendors, live entertainment, including a tribute band, and lots of food and beverages, and a beer tent.
While many ACBS-Toronto members will be enjoying the traditional Sunday brunch at Beaumaris Yacht Club, several boats will still be on display and membership information will be available. These elements are designed to attract a wider audience and introduce them to antique and classic boating.

In addition, our feature boat, the newly restored Miss Canada IV will be reunited with her sister boat, Miss Canada III which will be on loan to the Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre courtesy of the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, NY.

Other events scheduled through the weekend include:
Racing with the Legends, an informative evening (Thursday, July 4) featuring a series of race boat videos with special presentations narrated by Jim Thompson and Tom D’Eath.

In order to be together, the two lovers must risk everything including their own lives.

On Saturday July 20^th, 2013, the 9^th Annual MS Leap of Faith Beach Volleyball Tournament will be held at Tyndale Parks in Barrie. This tournament is held each year to raise funds in support of the fight against multiple sclerosis. Funds are donated to the MS Society, Simcoe County Chapter to assist people and families affected by MS in our community and to help fund research into the treatment of MS> Last year’s event resulted in 15 teams, more than 59 players and a dozen of volunteers raising over $8,500 in pledges and donations during this exciting one-day event.

Mixed teams of 4 can register in either the Competitive or Recreational Divisions. To register, a minimum of $50 in pledges per player must be collected, with a minimum age of 16 to participate.

The Knights of Columbus, Council 5793, will be holding their 16^th Annual Golf Tournament on Saturday August 17^th, 2013 at Cranberry Golf Resort in Collingwood.

The Knights of Columbus Council has helped raise over $6,000 for The Door, a Youth Drop In Centre in Collingwood, as well as over $250,000 for the new cancer treatment facility at the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre in Barrie. The Knights have also made substaintial donations to the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital as well as My Friends House, some local food banks and the Salvation Army.

The format is best ball and will commence following the shotgun start at 1 pm.

CIBC Run for the Cure

Welcome all newcomer participants and veteran supporters of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. We thank you for choosing to direct your invaluable time, effort, dollars and heart to sharing our vision of creating a future without breast cancer.

The Foundation is making a significant impact to reduce the burden of breast cancer through research, education, awareness and advocacy initiatives with your support. Please mark your calendar for the 22nd annual Run for the Cure on Sunday, October 6, 2013.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada's largest single day, volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research, education and awareness programs. It was founded by a small group of volunteers who wanted to raise awareness and funds for the breast cancer cause. The CIBC Run for the Cure has made great strides since then, while staying true to grassroots and our volunteer founders’ vision.

Last year, Canadians united to raise over $30 million in the 2012 Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. The fundraising efforts and volunteer support of over 170,000 annual participants allows the Foundation to continue funding groundbreaking research, education, awareness and advocacy initiatives.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is extremely grateful for this support and is honoured to be entrusted by the nation to continue to lead the way towards our vision of creating a future without breast cancer.
